A British man was rescued by the French coast guard after he set out swimming from the beach to the United States.

34-year-old told his friends on the French beach Biarritz that he would swim all the way to New York to carry the Olympic spirit across the Atlantic Ocean.

They thought he was joking, but knowing he was a very strong swimmer they did not oppose him. They told him they would send a boat to rescue him in case of difficulties. He swam out past buoys, which marked the end of the legal swimming area.

He kept swimming as far as he disappeared out of sight of all, confirming the idea that he was serious in swimming 3 594 miles. French coast guard sent a helicopter and a diver to save him, explaining him that it was not a good idea.

He replied that he was a strong swimmer and felt up to it. Subsequently the coast guard sent a boat, tied him with a rope and dragged him to the beach.
