Mitrovica - Local Public Safety Committee of the municipality of Mitrovica in today's meeting assessed that the situation in the municipality is still tense, but after all that have happened in the last month, signs of its normalization were noticed.

It was said that as of today the Kosovo police and EULEX officers will start patrolling on foot in most sensitive areas with mixed population in the north.

Though during the last week there were no serious incidents, the mayor Kastrati said he had regular contacts with representatives of KFOR, EULEX and the Kosovo police, in order to take additional measures to prevent possible incidents, especially in mixed environments. He also hereby greeted KFOR commitment and behavior of citizens for their contribution in calming the situation.

In the meeting he had with representatives of EULEX, he said they have pledged to do everything that is possible with other security structures, to commit in maintaining peace and security in the municipality, especially in environments threatened by recent incidents.

Director for Protection and Rescue in the municipality of Mitrovica, Behxhet Bala, said it has been largely quiet last week in the municipality, thanks to public awareness and increased presence of KFOR in northern areas of the city.

Even Nysret Mehmeti of regional Kosovo police said the situation is calm thanks to the greater presence of KFOR, EULEX and Kosovo police in all the northern areas. He spoke of an incident in a church institution in the north, where there were shooting between rival groups, supporters of various factions of the Serbian Orthodox Church leaders.

Mehmeti announced that as from today (Monday) Kosovo police officers and those of EULEX will start patrolling on foot in sensitive areas with mixed population in the north, which will be made from 8 o’clock in the morning until 4 o’clock in the afternoon.
