At a site near Belgrade, in the natural reservation is produced the most expensive cheese in the world. For just 1 kg of cheese it is needed 25 liters of donkey milk and it supposedly explains its high price of 1 000 euro per kilogram of this cheese.
Currently there are 120 donkeys that may provide from two to 11 liters of milk maximum per day, depending on whether they are in the period of creating milk (lactation). Donkey throughout the year can provide a maximum of 35 liters of milk, and this only until they bring up their young. In the animal world donkeys are known for longest carry of unborn young, full 1 year and 15 days, and of course during that time they do not provide milk.
So the price of 1 000 euro per kilo of cheese is achieved by simple calculation, 40 times 25. Figure 40 shows the price of donkey’s milk in Serbia, and 25 liters quantity needed to produce one kilo of cheese.
According to the Zagreb newspaper Vecernji List, price of this kind of milk in Croatia goes up to 70, and in Europe even 100 euro. This milk is specific because there is almost 100% the same composition with maternal milk. But, for the production of cheese is added a small amount of goat's milk, as donkey’s milk contains only 1% fat.
The sale of this type of cheese is made only via the internet or by order directly at home.
